The race for UDP leader has taken on new intensity, following the launch of John’s Saldivar’s bid for leadership this past Saturday. Saldivar had the participation of no less than 19 UDP standard bearers, dwarfing the Cabinet support that his contender Patrick Faber enjoys. Saldivar and his team pulled out dozens of buses of supporters to Faber’s home-base, Belize City, to kick-start his campaign. The media spoke to Saldivar following the event and asked him about his campaign.

johnHon. John Saldivar, UDP leader aspirant

“I feel very good, we’ve have put in our work and I have the support of many of my colleagues and this I the production, this is what happen when you have majority of your colleagues with you.”

Reporter

“We saw that you have at least nineteen, I would say nineteen but you say its twenty is that correct amount?”

Hon. John Saldivar, UDP leader aspirant

“Right now, the count is probably at twenty-two.”

Reporter

“And you have a very significant Mr. Finnegan and you know that he was when you lost the last time in the bid for deputy he was the campaign manager for Patrick Farber, explain to me his declaring now publicly as a supporter for your camp?”

Hon. John Saldivar, UDP leader aspirant

“Am very humbled by the fact that the second longest serving member of this party beside only the Prime Minister has come out publicly now to show hi support for me it means a lot to and to my campaign, it will give a good boost to my campaign and I believe things will come.”

Reporter

“Shyne Barrow and then we have Sister B with her crowd here as well they were not at Farber’s event, is this indicative of the fact that well the Prime Minister son and his sister can we say that it’s the Prime Minister support?”

Hon. John Saldivar, UDP leader aspirant

“I think you have asked him that question and he has answered it that he has decided who he will vote for but he will not make it public so I will not attempt to do so today.”

But the two 8-ton gorillas in Saldivar’s campaign are undoubtedly difficult for the public to ignore easily. These are, firstly, the return and involvement of the embattled Gaspar Vega as one of his key supporters, and secondly, his former business dealings with accused murderer Danny Mason who is currently on trial for the beheading murder of Pastor Llewelyn Lucas.

Saldivar doesn’t believe any of the two will affect his campaign for leader, however.

Reporter

“You have Gaspar Vega on your flyer of the twenty-one is he coming back as a Standard Bearer for the next election?”

Hon. John Saldivar, UDP leader aspirant

“That is not what he is saying that is saying that he as an area representative the person controlling the Orange Walk North constituency he is on my team.

The UDP convention is scheduled for February 9TH, 2020.
