The editor of the Guardian Newspaper and one of the hosts of Wave Radio’s morning show, Alfonso Noble today pled guilty to causing the death of Gilbert Myers and was ordered to pay three thousand dollars. Following the fatal incident which occurred on Christmas Eve of 2016, Noble was originally charged with “manslaughter by negligence, causing death by careless conduct, driving a motor vehicle without due care and attention, and failing to provide specimen to police for testing”. The charge for failure to provide specimen to police for testing was levied after he refused police a specimen claiming that doing so was contrary to his religious faith. He told police that he is Jehovah’s Witness.

Following today’s court proceedings, the media got the opportunity to speak to Noble about the outcome of the case.

alfonsoAlfonso Noble:

“On advice and having consider the matter very carefully I have decided to enter a guilty plea on the charge of causing death by driving without due care and attention. It ahs been almost three years since this incident happen on the 24th of December 2016, it ahs been a source of great consolidation today and I could imagine I could only begin to imagine what its been like to the family living without their primary bread winner and I am truly, truly sorry for what happened that night, if I could take it back I would but unfortunately I am unable to and I will only have to live with this for the rest of my life. I must say as well having spoken about the issue publicly I had to await for this matter be completely finish at Supreme Court level, it was Christmas eve, it was raining and it was very dark that section between three and four in the George Price highway is a problematic area, it have seen multiple instances of people losing their lives in that area and I think it something that needs to be address, under raining conditions and dark at night the gentleman was riding a bicycle, black shirt, black pants and he is of very dark complexion as well it was for an accident waiting to happen and it happened to me unfortunately.”

“The prosecutor had mentioned that there were contained beers on your vehicle, it that correct?”

Alfonso Noble:

“Those were allegations and if you noticed the judge was nor here nor there because it wasn’t part of the substantive case.”

Prior to today’s court proceedings Noble had reportedly reached an amicable settlement with Myers' family, in which they were paid over one hundred thousand dollars in compensation. That settlement reportedly ended a civil suit which had been filed against Noble by the Myers family. The settlement was also leverage to get the criminal charges against Noble dropped. The court proceeding however, was not halted due to the amount of evidence presented at the preliminary inquiry in May of last year which convinced the magistrate to commit Noble to stand trial in the Supreme Court.

For his guilty plea to the lesser charge of “Causing Death by Careless Conduct” Noble was ordered to pay three thousand dollars within nine months and his driver’s license was suspended for three months.
