No-ImageTwenty-five-year-old Kashief Bevans was today sentenced to twenty-one years’ imprisonment after pleading guilty to manslaughter in connection with the 2015 shooting death of eighteen-year-old Orange Walk Resident Derrick Romero.

Romero viewers may remember was shot and killed while at his home in the Louisiana Area on May 6th 2015. At the time of the incident it was reported that he was in the company of three other male persons when a dark complexion male person on a bicycle arrived, hopped over the fence, asked for Romero and then proceeded to fire several shots at him. Romero received seven gunshot wounds to various parts of the body and died while receiving treatment at the Northern Regional Hospital. A few hours after the fatal shooting Bevans, a resident of Belize City was arrested and charged for murder.

Before a murder trial could commence in this case however, Bevans agreed to plead guilty to the lesser charge of Manslaughter. Bevans’ guilty plea was today accepted inside the Orange Walk Chapter of the Supreme Court. Before handing down a sentence however, Judge Herbert Lord heard an impact statement from Romero’s mother as well as a sworn statement provided by the accused Kashief Bevans. During his statement, Bevans told the court that he takes full responsibility for his actions and expressed remorse over the incident. Bevans also extended an apology to the court as well as to the victim’s family.

After hearing submissions from both the defense and the crown, Judge Lord handed down a sentence of twenty-one years. Four and a half years were removed from the original sentence for time served. An additional three and a half years was also removed for Bevans’ early plea, leaving a total of thirteen years. After six years Bevans is eligible to apply for parole.
