Last Friday October 25th was the deadline for candidates to submit their applications for the United Democratic Party’s upcoming leadership convention. Up for grabs are key executive posts, including leader, 1st and 2nd deputy leader, and chairman. On October 22nd, Corozal North area representative and Minister of Natural Resources Hugo Patt announced his interest in the UDP’s 1st Deputy Leader post. But he was actually entering a contest, since UDP Albert representative, Tracey Taegar-Panton, had applied just days before him. Today Patt spoke to us about his candidacy and made a major announcement in declaring his support for National Security Minister John Saldivar over Deputy Prime Minister Patrick Faber for UDP leader.

“I had a number of my colleagues approach me in terms of my candidacy for first deputy party leader of our party and from there we had some conversations and I told them look I think if anybody would step up into any leadership position you first have to prove yourself, I believe that if you are going to get yourself as a leader first we have to prove that you are capable of doing that type of being able to comply with the demand of that type of position and so I built myself upon the work that I have done in my two ministries, the ministry that I had before which was local government, rural development and labor and now at lands department and so I am fully confident going forward and we have gotten the support of many of my colleagues in terms of my candidacy and so we are going full fledge in terms of the campaigning for the following convention which will be held in February of 2020.”

“How will you deal with the Tracey Teager Panton competition that will be there?”

Hon. Hugo Patt, Minister of Natural Resources

“Well, you know in our party nobody stops anybody from applying and so minister Panton has applied and I have full respect for her and she is a good friend of mine and she has proven to be a champion in her constituency and in her ministry and so I have utmost respect for her. In terms of my campaigning one thing that I have learn in politics is that I have never campaigned criticizing anybody and so I can paint by what I have achieved and I can paint by what I can contribute to my party and on the basis of that I will move. She will have to do her own campaigning and I respect that and I have spoken to her and I told her and as much as I can say I will respect the level of campaigning that she does at the end of the day there will be one winner and if she happens to win I will respect and support her and so that is the agreement that we have reached.”

“We understand that you are supporting also somebody for the leadership position and that person is?”

Hon. Hugo Patt, Minister of Natural Resources

“I have indicated my support to John Saldivar and so I have spoken to both aspirants and I have explained to them my position and I have let them know that my support is inclined to John Saldivar.”
