With the sugar industry under threat of survival due to the drought and now the grass loopers a date is yet to be set for the commencement of the 2019/2020 crop season. While the crop usually kicks off ending of November or beginning of December it seems the new season will kick off until January 2020.

“I don’t that we will have a crop in January and I see that very unlikely and sugarcane that was harvested in December, January has not fully grown, its doesn’t have the height that is suppose to have, it doesn’t have the thickness and I don’t see us beginning in January unless other areas were less affected and the survey reveals that because they have to do a survey before the crop begins to see if they have enough sugarcane to begin the crop and have the enough sugarcane have the maturity and the purity, the maturity index we can begin but I don’t see that happening in January, sad but true.”

Mai further indicated that the invasion of the grass loopers has now added a dual impact on the industry.

Hon. Jose Mai – PUP Shadow Minister, Ministry of Agriculture

“I’ve been to my cane field and we’ve been doing from weed control and we see the worms but the worms are, but I don’t know the level of infestations on other fields but I can tell you about my fields and I have like 10 to 15 percent infestation but we have already have sugarcane affected by the drought, the ability to produce is being affected now you have further problem with the works that are eating the leaves having now the plant now being restricted to photosynthesis because they are being taken away the leaves and so they cannot make food to feed itself then the problem is being compounded now. So, when th4e government look at the cane farmers and Mr. Hulse oh we are giving the farmers two million dollars they look in our face and laugh what foolishness are you talking about, what nonsense far from reality these guys living in a totally different world than what are living today.”

As mentioned by Mai, a survey would need to be conducted so as to determine what percentage of cane would be fit to harvest.
