The United Democratic Party has set Sunday February 9th 2020 as the date for their national convention.
In that convention the UDP will elect a new leader, deputy leader and other Executive members as three-term Prime Minister Dean Barrow prepares to retire from politics.
So far, current Deputy Leader Patrick Faber and Belmopan Representative Hon. John Saldivar are the only two candidates who have shown interest in vying for leadership. There have been strong reports of a third candidate stepping up to the challenge, but no one is admitting such interest.
It is expected that whoever wins the leadership race will take over as interim Prime Minister following Barrow’s resignation and ahead of the general elections which is due by November 2020.
The stakes at the convention will be high. There has been a history of bad blood between Faber and Saldivar. At their last convention, Faber defeated Saldivar for the post of Deputy Leader despite Salidvar enjoying the support of a majority of Cabinet members.
