no_imageThe Belize Crime Observatory (BCO) has published its monthly major crimes analysis for the period of June 1st to the June 30th, 2019. Figures show that there were 101 major crimes reported by the Belize Police Department and indicates that this is the first month for the year 2019 to record a higher count of major crimes in comparison to June 2018. Figures show that there were a total of eighteen murders in June 2019, marking an increase of 14 or 350% compared to June of last year which only recorded four murders.

Murders for January to June 2019, however, stands a total of 66, marking a decline of 16 murders or an overall 20 percent decrease in murders as opposed to June 2018. Additional reports show that nine out of every ten murders occurred in the Belize District and that they were all deemed to have been gang-related. Of the 18 murders, nine were recorded in Belize City, 7 of them were recorded in the Belize Rural area including San Pedro, Hattieville and Ladyville, whereas the remaining two murders occurred in Corozal and Belmopan, respectively.

The crime data as at June 2019 demonstrates that there were also 52 cases of rape, 122 robbery, 292 burglaries and 348 cases of theft. Data provided by the Belize Police Department reveals there was a decrease in incidents for all categories of major crimes except for rape and unlawful sexual intercourse during the sixth month period for this year. Major theft saw the most substantial fall of 31.25%, followed by burglary for which incidents fell by 22.75%. Reports of rape, on the other hand, were up by 216.67% from January to June in 2018.

Over the same sixth month period, Belize District alone accounted for 41.84 percent of all major crime reports while the Toledo District accounted for the smallest percentage which stood at 3.2 percent.

Though murder accounted for 12 percent of all major crimes countrywide…in Toledo, it accounted for 38 percent. On the contrary, murders accounted for one percent of major crimes reported in Orange Walk, 3 percent in Corozal, and 4 percent in Stann Creek. Belize and Cayo Districts, recorded 19 and 10 percent of major crimes, respectively.
