News that shots had been fired on Unity Street near 123 Supermarket here in the Orange Walk District shortly after one this afternoon spread like wildfire across town. When we arrived in the area shortly after we found police reportedly conducting a search at a residence on Unity Street. Reports from residents in the area however was that police had fired several shots towards an unknown individual shortly before the search was conducted. The shots, according to residents, were fired while several other persons were walking around the general vicinity.
When we contacted the Orange Walk Police formation today concerning this incident, we were informed by second in command at the Orange Walk Police Formation Assistant Superintendent Paulino Reyes that officers were in the area on special operations. When questioned about the reports of officers firing at an individual in the area Assistant Superintendent Reyes however denied such reports stating and we quote “the shots fired were rubber bullets, as a result of being attacked by a dog. They were not aimed at any individual”.
