Last week Prime Minister Dean Barrow made active attempts to keep the full extent of the Sanctuary Bay scandal, as revealed by the Federal Trade Commission in court documents, out of the public discourse. Following a press conference in which he defended his Government’s role in the scheme and allegations against him made by the FTC, letters from his law firm were issued to the media warning against repeating the contents of FTC documents and threatening to sue. Since then, there has been an evident disappearance of the topic, especially in the media.
Today the Opposition People’s United Party attempted to bring the issue back to the forefront, however, holding a press conference and responding to the Prime Minister’s attempts to keep the Sanctuary Bay scandal at bay. Opposition Leader John Briceno spoke on the topic, saying the scandal is this Barrow Administration’s Achilles heel.
Hon. John Briceno, Leader of the Opposition
“Mr. Barrow, sanctuary Bay is your UDP government scandal, your law firm represented them, your government supported them, you even went so far as to personally help to settle the case against Atlantic International Bank, you can’t run, you can’t hide, you can’t use big words to explain this scandal away you must now own this, Belizeans demand accountability, wrong doing cannot be ignored there must be resignations, the Prime Minister stated that he would take one for his team is that the corrupt team Prime Minister, you and your cronies must now take one for team Belize and for god sake leave. We are prepared to look at any action that would be necessary and if demonstration is what it will take to bring down this government certainly we will do that but what is more important to us is to be able to working the village councils, to continue winning elections in the village councils, you don’t win election by demonstration you win elections by meeting the people, talking to them, convincing them and showing them how is it that you are going to make their lives better and that is exactly what we are working on.”
