Today the office of the Secretary General of the Opposition People’s United Party issued a fiery release calling out the Government of Belize for allegedly playing political games within the Social Security Board. The release states and we quote “Belizean employers and employees who have worked tirelessly to ensure that our social safety net, the SSB, is healthy and thriving, should be outraged at the news that this organization is on the brink of collapse. We should all condemn the SSB Board for its clear political interference, manipulation and gross incompetence which are at the heart of SSB’s financial woes” unquote
In their release the PUP is alleging coercion between UDP operatives and SSB CEO through a Cabinet Paper sent by CEO of the Social Security Board. According to the release the paper entitled – “How the UDP can Leverage SSB’s Sustainability to Gain Political Advantage.” allegedly explains how the UDP can spin the near bankruptcy of the SSB to gain mileage whenever elections are called. The release states and we quote “it goes so far as to provide detailed steps on how the UDP can fool the Belizean people into thinking that the move to increase contributions is a good thing, compared to the fallout if the entity should collapse.” it continues “The PUP rejects the politicization of the SSB, led by a UDP-appointed CEO who is also a campaign manager for that political party. We have witnessed the pumping of the people’s money into projects and investments which are unjustifiable. We have seen an entity totally infiltrated by the UDP, where the head of the Investment Committee is the Prime Minister’s Financial Advisor” unquote
In ending the PUP calls on GOB to “immediately desist from playing the dirtiest politics with the people’s money.” We are yet to receive a response from CEO of the Social Security Board Collin Young.
The release comes at the heels of an announced new increase in Social Security contributions following reports of a deficit at which the SSB is currently operating on. As we told you, in order to prevent the SSB’s fund from collapsing, Belizeans will now have to pay more and such increase will begin to take effect on July 1st.
