Over a week ago, there was a back forth between the Minister of Health and the Mayor of Belize City Bernard Wagner over the handing over of exercise equipment promised to the Belize City Council but instead handed over to the Ministry of Sports by Health Minister Pablo Marin.
As viewers may recall, the outdoor exercise equipment came as a donation from the Taiwanese Government. Back in October of last year, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Ministry and the Mayors Association of Belize where it was agreed that upon arrival, the equipment would be handed over to the Mayors of each municipality and subsequently be installed in areas of their respective choices.
While that was the agreement Mayor Wagner and Corozal Mayor Rigo Vellos were the only two Municipal Leaders who did not receive the equipment directly. In fact they had no say where the workout pieces would be installed. Those instructions came directly from the Minister of Health. Today, Leader of the Opposition, Hon. John Briceno, weighed in on the matter indicating that the Minister of Health’s behavior comes as no surprise to him.
Honorable John Briceno – Party Leader, PUP
“I’m not surprised because that is the the minister of health has always behaved you know for him it is simply about politics and sometimes they can’t separate their work as a government from their work as politicians and he can’t distinguish the difference and it is disgusting just because there is a PUP Corozal Town Council and a PUP City council that he will take equipment that was donated for these town and city for them to say well I am going to decide who am going to give it to and this is disgusting that he is behaving in such a way but also I would have hoped that the people from the Embassy of Taiwan would have said something and if they don’t want to say it well at the very least get another equipment for the town council or the city council because it is for the residence for those two communities.”
As for Orange Walk Town, the equipment has been handed over to Mayor Kevin Bernard where it is expected to be placed at the Phillip Alvarez Park and at the Price Avenue area.
