The recent triple murder of school principal Alarice Andrewin, her roommate Vidal Yuman and his girlfriend Maria Juarez undoubtedly highlighted the shortcomings faced by our country as it relates to crime and violence. The increasing number of crimes in the Jewel has also been noted in rampant reports of armed robberies and assaults which has been ongoing for several months. There is no denying that the increasing crime rate has certainly caught the nation's attention and today Opposition Leader John Briceno spoke on the issue calling on GOB to handle the problem from the inside out.
Honorable John Briceno - Party Leader of People's United Party
“I wish we could say that we see a positive reaction from this government or the government could have come up with a comprehensive plan as to what they plan to do and we haven’t seen any of that. We as the opposition we have been reaching out to them, we have been giving out ideas to them, we have been saying over and over that we are prepared to work with them but the government is not interested to them everything is about politics, politics and politics and whilst they continue to play politics people continue to punish and suffer, look at the result I mean when you look at what is taking place it is a matter of resources, is a matter of training, first of all, you have to ensure that they have the right people in the police department for the past years now if you want to join the police department you have to get a letter from either a UDP representative, a UDP minister so its no longer about you whether are properly qualified or not, so the police department is not at its best right now and we need to take a very hard look at that and see who are the good cops and the bad cops we have to get rid of the bad ones we have to change them because the cops are the first line of defense when it comes to crime. Secondly we also have to look at the issue of the persecution branch that whilst the cops already having difficulty in bringing a case to the courts but also if the prosecution is not properly trained and we don’t and we don’t have enough good prosecutors then people get away and that is why crime continue to grow spiral and out of control not only because of unemployment and that we don’t have a good economy but also they see and they say you know what my friend get away when he got hold up so might as well I go do that not justifying it but that is what is happening we need to be able to have a good policing, a good prosecution branch because if you commit the crime you must do the time and that is not happening right now.”
