GentleIn last night’s newscast, we reported on the botched criminal prosecution of 42-year-old Robert Gentle, of Ranchito Village, who was accused of drug trafficking in early 2018.

In Court, the Police prosecution indicated that they would not proceed into trial and would withdraw the matter instead in the interest of justice.

We had reported last night also that the decision was made by the office of the Director of Public Prosecution, since it is a known fact that the DPP’s office provides legal advice to the Police on how to proceed with major cases. But today we learnt that the DPP’s office actually had no role to play in yesterday’s decision, and it was one taken by the Police prosecution alone.

This afternoon we were contacted by crown counsel in the DPP’s Orange Walk office, Shanidi Chell, who indicated that the office had also not seen the case file on Gentle and therefore were not involved in the case. This means the DPP’s office was not consulted on the case and Police prosecution dealt with the entire matter on their own.

As we reported, an individual attempted to cross into neighbouring Mexico through its Southern border on December 13th 2017 in this luxury Lincoln Navigator SUV. At the Mexican customs and security, the x-tray apparatus alerted officials of something wrong, forcing the driver to turn back in the direction of Belize. The driver made it to the Belize border area, and ended up crashing at the gate of the customs cargo section. The driver ran out of the vehicle and disappeared.

When the Police searched the vehicle, they found six packages of suspected cocaine under dashboard cover, weighing a total 6 kilos.

There was also an unresolved issue with the luxury SUV. It was reported stolen in Belize City by the owner Dwight Faber just minutes after the incident at the northern border. According to the Police, Faber claimed that the vehicle was stolen from a mechanic shop. However, there was no charge on Gentle in relation to the stolen vehicle.
