In last night’s newscast, we reported on a horrific road traffic accident in San Narciso Village, between miles 72 and 73, which claimed two well-known individuals in the community – that of 73 year old Audomaro Chan and his wife, 71 year old Romana Chan.
The couple had been united in marriage for 51 years, until yesterday when the dedicated husband took his wife for a medical check-up. They drove from the direction of San Roman towards San Narciso and attempted to make a turn across the highway in their Ford Ranger pickup truck, into the San Narciso Polyclinic compound. As they tried to make it across the road, an incoming towhead truck pulling a heavy freight could not avoid slamming into the pickup truck.
Ramona Chan, who was sitting on the passenger seat, received the most impact and her motionless body was taken out of the mangled remains of the pickup truck. She had died on impact.
Audomaro Chan survived and he was taken by ambulance to the Corozal Community Hospital, only to be transferred to Belize City. He died before he made it to the hospital.
While the family opted not to comment on the tragic accident, Chairman of the Village Elvis Correa, who has been a close neighbour with the Chan family, shared that the deaths are major losses to the community.
Chairman Elvis Correa on fatal RTA
“I received a big shock because those persons that died yesterday were well known at the village and were my neighbours very good friend and it was a shock for me. My neighbours were Catholics and very well known at the village and I think Mr. Audomaro was a leader for his church for a long time and one of the things that I will always remember is his white hair and he was in church almost everyday, I think that if it wouldn’t have happened he would be in his church today because we have confirmation today and well he is in another place.”
