Screen_Shot_2018-09-06_at_8.07.09_PMThis afternoon a special graduation ceremony was held for 224 cane farmers who participated in the Sugar Industry Research and Development Institute’s “Farmer Field School” programme. If you’re wondering how school and cane field go together, well SIRDI has developed a programme where cane farmers can sign up for courses that teach best practices on the cane field. The objective of the programme is to create a sustainable sugar industry in northern Belize.

Gabriel Martinez, Chairman, SICB

Today a total of 224 farmers will be receiving a certificate of completion as a result of hard work, participation, dedication and interest in enhancing their knowledge in sugar cane husbandry through the farmer field school, the project is entitled creating a sustainable sugar cane industry in northern Belize and is funded by the multilateral investment fund. The project’s objective at impact levels is to sustain or increase the income of northern Belize sugar cane farmers. The project’s objective at the result level is to increase farm level capacity of northern Belize sugar cane farmers to become globally competitive. Today certification of completion ceremony is just one of the other many key milestones accomplished under the project. The government of Belize is very much appreciative of the multilateral investment fund for financing this project I urge other development partners to follow and to continue to work with the government in the transformative journey for the sugar industry.”

We’ll have more on this special ceremony in tomorrow’s newscast.
