Opposition Leader John Briceno exposed today that the family of Government Minister Rene Montero has benefited from millions of dollars in the form of land compensations given by the then Minister of Natural Resources, Gaspar Vega.

The Opposition has obtained copies of the compensation agreement between Vega and five Montero family members which show that they were paid over three million dollars for compensation for land deals that date back to the previous UDP/Manuel Esquivel era. Opposition Leader Hon. John Briceno shed more light on these questionable and highly controversial compensation deals.

“We manage to get nine compensation agreements that were signed between July and August of 2011. Yvette Montero is the daughter of Minister Montero and Miguel and Ismael and Jaime and Alejandro they are the brothers of Minister Montero, we have a copy of the spreadsheet: Yvette Montero got 7 acres of land six miles north of Ambergris Caye and she paid $3080.00 for it. Minister Vega, the Deputy Prime Minister and approved by the ministry of finance agree to compensate Yvette Montero $245,000.00. Miguel Montero got 10 acres again at the north of San Pedro for $4400.00, four acres of land four miles west of San Pedro for $1760.00 and 20.13 acres of land at Privation Enclave area in the Mountain Pine Ridge for $4428.00, for those three parcels of land Miguel Montero was compensated $721,000.00. Ismael Montero for ten acres in Privation Enclave Mountain Pine Ridge for $2220.00 and he was compensated $82,352.00 for that parcel of land. Yvette Montero again got ten acres of land in the Privation Enclave Mountain Pine Ridge for $2204.00 and was compensated $80,000.00 for that land. Jaime Montero got five acres of land six miles north west of San Pedro for $2200.00 and he was compensated $175,000.00 for that land. Alejandro Montero got ten acres in the Privation enclave Mountain Pine Ridge and he was given $80,000.00 as per the agreement that we have right here and then Alejandro Montero for another four acres north west of San Pedro for $1760.00 and then got another five acres of land in the same area for $2200.00 and was then compensated for these two parcels of land $395,000.00. The Montero family collected $1,778,352.00 and then to add salt to injury as they would say they were given 7% interest from the date of acquisition so the interest is about $1,369,331.00. The Montero family have been compensated by us the taxpayers of this country a grand total of $3,147,683.00.”

There have been a lot of questions asked over the Ministry of Natural Resources’ compensations ever since it was found that former Deputy Prime Minister Vega paid his son Andre Vega and a UDP supporter Sharon Pitts $800,000 under questionable circumstances. The Government has claimed to be seeking that both individuals return the money.

It was discovered shortly after that the Government’s compensation bill under Vega was $70 million, so eyebrows were raised about the validity of many of the payments. Today Opposition leader Briceno said that the PM who is the Minister of Finance and his Cabinet have questions to answer.

Honourable John Briceno – Party Leader for the People United Party

“For sometime ago, we have been asking for the Audit that the Prime Minister promised that he was going to do in the ministry of Natural Resources when it comes to compensation because we knew that there was a major hustling, we knew that there was a scam, we knew that there was thieving in the ministry of Natural Resources and this was one of the easiest ways that they were getting their hands on millions of dollars. This is a direct indictment of the Cabinet and the Prime Minister as the minister of Finance, the Cabinet knew from day one what they were doing.”

Briceno shared that the information put out today is just the tip of the iceberg as his office has been presented with much more documents which are now being reviewed.
