For several weeks we’ve been reporting on the construction taking place along a roundabout near the Santa Rita area of Corozal Town. The project isn’t being carried out by the Corozal Town Council, but by Area Representative Pablo Marin, so there is very little information available or forthcoming about the source of funding or the cost of the project.
What we do know is that the project doesn’t have the unanimous blessing of the local tourism committee who is the body responsible for any tourism-related project in the municipality. Leaked copies of their meetings have shown that members have questioned how Marin came up with the idea and design, if they nor the public was consulted.
Members of the public have also expressed concern that the site could create a problem for the heavy traffic in the area.
Those views are not stopping the work and today large stones continued to be piled on the structure as the plan is to construct a Maya temple replica with a jade head on it.
But there could be more controversy still. CTV3 News has received unconfirmed but reliable reports that the contract for the project was given to a contractor from all the way in Succotz, Benque Viejo Del Carmen. We understand also that a majority of the workers on the site are also Benquenos. Our source shared that the contractor was selected by Cayo West Area Representative Erwin Contreras. For those who may not know, last year Marin married Contreras’ daughter, Danini Contreras, who is also an employee at the Ministry of Health.
We understand this sourcing by area representative Pablo Marin of an outside contractor and outside workers has caused some heavy friction in the UDP in Corozal Town, especially with the Municipal elections coming up. Despite all of the above mentioned, Marin is proceeding with the project.
