Mexican authorities confiscated 35,000 cigarettes when it intercepted a van transporting the contraband goods near the Belize-Mexico border.
On October 29th, the authorities intercepted the van at a checkpoint in the Botes community. The van speeded up instead of slow down when approaching the checkpoint, but it did not get far. The driver of the van ended up losing control, and the van careened off the road and into a ditch. The driver and passengers jumped out of the van and escaped by running away.
Inside the van, authorities discovered 70 boxes of cigarettes totalling 35,000 cigarettes. The value of the items are reportedly 450,000 Mexican pesos, or about $50,000 Belize dollars.
Authorities believe the contraband goods came from the Free Zone and the attempt to get into Mexico was to evade the payment of taxes.
