On Tuesday the Belize Progressive Party slammed the Barrow Administration for refusing to carry out a re-registration exercise that would clean up the voters’ list. The last re-registration was done in 1997, which means one was due in 2007 and the other in 2017, but both were postponed, with the first due to nearing elections. In the case of the exercise this year, the Government is saying it simply cannot afford it. The Belize Territorial Volunteers, whose leader is also the Deputy leader for the BPP, today came out in support. They held a meeting at the BPP’s office to discuss what they can do to put some pressure on the Government.

“We had two learned Attorneys in here and we were discussing the possibility of basically maybe challenging the extension that the GG signed recently for re-registration posting it basically until 2018 and again we are very disturbed that it has been pushed back yet another year when we know that the voters’ list is very contaminated.  The municipal elections are still eight months away and there is time especially when there is money that is donated or promised to the government recently by the Taiwanese to have a re-registration we discussed that we cannot, that we are really like disturbed or the fact that even maybe at this time the opposition has agreed to go into elections with a contaminated list, this is not a UDP list of a PUP list, DPP or VIP list, this list is for the people of Belize and we know that this voter’s list is contaminated and have a lot of people on it that should not be there and it is very important that the people of Belize get that list that belongs to them, the voter’s list belongs to the people of Belize and again I go back to the point that we all know that the list is very contaminated and it needed to be clean even before the municipal elections because at this time we are slide to go to municipal elections knowing that there will not be re-registration and it is not fair to the people of Belize to have an election when you know that the list are padded.”

The Government claims that a re-registration exercise would cost about $20 Million dollars which is money they do not have. According to Maheia, the Government should utilise some of the funds recently provided by the Taiwan Government to the tune of $150 million to fund the process.

“They were complaining before that they did not have the money now the Taiwan government came and drop the money in their hands and that money is not stipulated for any specific project or anything so you could take twenty million out of that sixty million which in numerous people we have spoken with agree that it won’t even cost twenty million but since the Taiwanese have dropped that amount of money on their hands why we don’t use that money and get the re-registration going now we need to clean the list it is not for the UDP government or the PUP government or for any political party it is for the people of Belize.”
