Screen_Shot_2017-04-10_at_7.59.17_PMThe Belize Police Department is tonight once again at the center of controversy, this time its two officers attached to the Corozal Police Formation who are being accused of wrongdoings.  Police Corporal Abner Marroquin and Police Constable Elston Rojas are tonight in interdiction after being charged with Prejudice to Good Order and Discipline after the two men attempted to evade customs officers.

Reports are that Corozal Police received a video from Custom Officers from the Northern Border Station showing a police vehicle being pursued by the officers. According to the customs officials, on Saturday 8th April 2017 at around 2:00 p.m., a police vehicle with two police officers inside were seen transporting a black bag in the pan of the pickup, the men are said to have refused to stop at the checkpoint and were subsequently pursued by Custom Officers. The vehicle though, was able to evade the officers as its driver diverted into a feeder road. Officials kept in pursuit and along the feeder road they recovered a black bag matching the one that was being transported in the police vehicle. The bag was taken to the police station where it was opened and found to contain assorted slippers, socks and underwear.

The Commissioner of Police has since directed that an investigation into the matter be conducted which resulted in both officers being on interdiction from duty while investigation proceeds.

Of particular note is that this is not the first time that PC Elston Rojas has a run in with the law. According to our news archives Rojas was charged with the crime of abetment to commit robbery back in September 2011 after he was accused of purposely aiding and facilitating the theft of BZ$71,000 from an establishment located inside the Corozal Free zone.
