Belize’s Ambassador to Cuba, Her Excellency Annie Lou Burns and Belize’s Ambassador to CARICOM, His Excellency Daniel Gutierrez, travelled to Havana Cuba last week to attend the 22nd Session of the Ordinary Meeting of the Ministerial Council. The meeting was organized by the Association of Caribbean States (ACS) which is comprised of 25 nations including the 15 member states of CARICOM along with the Latin American Member States such as Cuba, Mexico and Central and South American countries.
The objective behind the meeting was to underline the work that the Secretariat has embarked on to re-energize, re-organize and re-brand the association. And while the effort of Secretary General to strengthen the ACS, introduce tactical planning and to attract donors was commended, representatives from the different Caribbean regions took the opportunity to express their disagreement regarding the blacklisting/isolating of Member States by non-regional partners as well as their grave concern about the unending assault that the loss of correspondent banking symbolizes for the Caribbean economy.
At the meeting, the great loss accompanied by the passing of Commander in Chief and Leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro Ruz as well as the passing of former President Rene Preval of Haiti were acknowledged.
We understand that the 5th CARICOM-Cuba meeting was also held over the weekend in Havana where both parties had the opportunity to underline their determination to fortify their relationship and seek ways to enhance their strategic partnership.
