Yesterday we told you the way in which Minister of Education Patrick Faber deflected Orange Walk East Area Representative Marcel Cardona’s accusation that the Education Ministry and the Deputy Prime Minister Gaspar Vega were plotting to reduce his funds. Faber said Cardona was wrong and he revealed that the funds were sitting at the Ministry, and it was simply up to Cardona to make an official request. According to Faber, the only requests the Ministry has received were those of a woman who called him and sent text messages, claiming she represented Cardona.
Little did we know that yesterday during the day, Cardona and Faber were meeting to iron out their issues, and from the sound of things, they have worked things out. Cardona has even gone from allowing his supporters to raise banners blasting away at Faber and Vega in one week, to writing the most sentimental press release we’ve seen from a beleaguered politician in another. And we’re not exaggerating. The press release that came out of the office of the Orange Walk East area rep today expresses profound gratitude to Minister Faber for his wisdom and support. Cardona even admits that he was wrong, pointing out that after all the protest held last week was misguided because they reacted to unconfirmed information. While Cardona could call it a victory of sorts, his actions could have made things worse for him as it was not less than embarrasing for the UDP to have one of their own setting up a protest against the Party and a Deputy Leader. Just how much worse it has made it for Cardona will only be told by time, and when the UDP holds their convention here in Orange Walk this weekend, we’ll wait and see if Cardona attends, and if he does, what sort of reception he will get.
