Last night Orange Walk Town witnessed its third killing for the new year, as a well-known businessman was ambushed and shot inside his store.  The incident played out at D.J’s Supermarket located on Stadium Street just before 8:00 last night.  CTV-3 News was the only news media at the scene just minutes after the victim, 56 year old Baldemar Moguel, was removed from his pool of blood behind the cash-counter and rushed to the Northern Regional Hospital.

Carmelita Perez reporting,

This was the scene when we arrived at #8 Stadium Street last night.  Heavily-armed Police stood at the entrance of D.J.’s Supermarket, keeping guard of the crime scene until investigators arrived.  The shop-owner, 56 year old Baldemar Moguel had just been shot on the center of his neck, chest, right side of the abdomen and right hand from point blank range.

Around 7:50 last night, Moguel and his wife, Christina, were inside the store when two dark-complexioned male individuals, wearing red and white t-shirts, entered the store and ordered two pounds of beans.  Police officials say Moguel got up to serve the men.  Upon returning to the counter, one of the individuals pointed a gun at him and fired five shots.

Inspector Selvin Tillett- Orange Walk Police Department
“From the inspections nothing was stolen from the place. Indications are that he did not have any fights with anybody or trouble whatever.  They just shoot him no?”

Carmelita Perez
“Have you all been able to speak to the residents of the area? Anyone saying that they saw these persons around the area?”

Inspector Selvin Tillett- Orange Walk Police Department
“We have been doing that from since last night and as I said based on some information the police are looking at the different angles, the different directions, and different persons.”

Carmelita Perez
“We understand that there is a camera inside the store, anything on that?”

Inspector Selvin Tillett- Orange Walk Police Department
“We are looking at that we don’t know if it was functioning so we are looking at that also.”

Police’s investigations have yielded limited information.  Reports are that the family has been reluctant to speak, and this afternoon when we visited their residence, which is located above the store, the victim’s son simply told us “no comment.”  A surveillance camera inside the store has also not helped investigators.  Police say the device was functional, but when they checked to see if it had captured anything, they noticed that it had been turned off.

We did talk to someone who witnessed the shooting.  That person was at the store when the gunmen arrived, and pulled the trigger.  He told us what he saw.

Witness
“I went to buy and when I walked in the shop I saw two men that were coming down the lane but I never did think anything so I went in the shop.  After a while I asked the man for what I went to buy and then the man went to the back of the shop and then the two men they never did pass and they were looking at the camera.  They wanted to make a move. I knew what was going to happen and I wanted to run out because I did not want them to shoot me.  I waited a while and when they came in, one of them held me by my shoulder but the man had not come back yet.  So when he turned around I just ran.”

Police are not certain about the motive for the shooting.  Investigators indicate that they are ruling out robbery because nothing was taken from the store.  Authorities also said they have reason to believe it could have been a hit.

A female witness’ testimony suggests that the men escaped in a red car with taxi license plate.  The witness says she saw four individuals inside the vehicle.

Information has led Police to this taxi with license plate D-00071 which has been impounded.  Today forensic officials searched for clues to help them solve the crime.

There is also some information on why Police impounded this vehicle.  Sources tell CTV3 News that car was rented by its owner, a resident of the Marcos Canul Area, to an individual reportedly involved in the incident.  We have learnt that police are aware of this information and are investigating.

Inspector Selvin Tillett- Orange Walk Police Department
“The investigations carried out by police out from the scene led us to this vehicle.”

Manuela Ayuso- Love Fm
“Has the driver been questioned?”

Inspector Selvin Tillett- Orange Walk Police Department
“We understood that this vehicle was rented so we are looking on that also.  At this moment we are looking for three persons that can assist us with this investigation.”

Reports are that the guman also pointed his firearm at Moguel’s wife, but the gun only snapped.  Police suspect that the weapon used to commit the crime was a pistol, which has not been found.
Up to news time no one had been arrested but police say they are questioning several individuals whom they believe can help them in their investigations. One of those persons is the owner of the impounded taxi.
